The Maine Educational Center for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing/ Gov. Baxter School for the Deaf is seeking a highly motivated individual who possesses strong communication skills, technical aptitude and organizational qualities to fill a full time position of Maintenance Mechanic. This position does require some hours on Saturdays.

Primary Responsibilities Include:

· Repairing and maintaining building structures (walls, woodwork, doors windows and floors) to ensure structural stability and safety

· Scraping, filling, sanding, priming, and painting surfaces, both interior and exterior

· Opening and assessing physical plant daily prior to staff arrival, lock up at days end

· Preparing meeting rooms and respond to custodial requests

· Cleaning, maintaining, and servicing hand tools, machinery, boiler system, equipment, and work area to maintain safety standards, prolong equipment life, and maintain equipment availability

· Operating snow removal and road maintenance equipment to clear walkways, driveways, parking lots and roads

· Maintaining grounds including lawn mowing, tree and branch removal, weeding, striping parking lot, filling pot holes, etc.

· Completing minor repairs/maintenance of heating, ventilating, plumbing and electrical systems with direction from the Maintenance Supervisor

· Providing back up transportation for students as necessary

Requirements

Required Skills and Qualifications:

· High school diploma or equivalent

· Minimum of 5 years’ experience in general maintenance

· Ability to use basic power tools, including saws, drills, lawn care equipment, etc.

· Knowledge of State and Federal laws relating to the operation of school facilities and worker safety

· Excellent verbal communication skills

· Willing to travel occasionally to other locations in Maine

· Ability to multi-task and work independently

· Willingness to learn American Sign Language

· Current CHRC (fingerprint) certificate required
